The Chosen Ones: A completely gripping murder mystery thriller with unputdownable suspense (Detective Robyn Carter Book 5) (English Edition) Reviews
A new case for DI Carter and this time she might not be able to figure out what's going on in time. When the killings don't stop Robyn Carter gets under pressure and her job is on the line. The man she thinks might be the number one suspect is "untouchable" and that infuriates her. She can't make the pieces fit and then she get's a message from her frenemy Amy, the reporter - HELP.Great new story, with twist and turns and a lot more information about Robyn Carters personal life and a shocking end. Can't wait to read more!
This one sucked me in from page 1- seemingly unconnected rather gruesome murders, played against the ongoing mystery of Robyn Carter's lover Davies (is he alive? a prisoner? back and stalking her? and the big question, why??). Twists and turns every other page. I had it all figured out-and was dead wrong. A lot of lessons from this book: never trust your emotions or first impressions. Religious fundamentalism (of any religion) doesn't make one a kinder gentler person. Kudos to Ms.Wyer for presenting horrible murders without gratuitous, nightmare provoking descriptions. For making us think about the world in which we are living today-where lies are accepted as truth, where decency is disappearing rapidly, where we don't recognize the world as we thought it was. This sense of dislocation is what this book is about-the reasons why almost make no sense, but there they are. It is to Ms.Wyer's credit that she manages to evoke a (OK, small) sense of pity for the murderer-quite a feat for any author. There are several shocking deaths at the end which I also didn't see coming (or maybe only one?) This is a book that makes you think, that makes you feel and that makes you sad that this is the world we live in today.Thank you Carol Wyer for the hours of escape from a world that is becoming darker than anything in this book. How I wish there were more Robyn Carters around to make things right. And how I hope that we have not seen the last of Robyn Carter.
Overall, this is a well-written police procedural with an interesting and complex storyline. For much of the book, the police can’t find connections between victims, and their witnesses are uncooperative. I found it odd that at least one detective did not do a cursory investigation on a crucial character, or at least have contacted a relative. If I’d read a hard copy of this book—instead of the Kindle version—I wouldn’t have finished it, because of some confusion because of the multiplicity of characters. For example, in Chapter 42, I couldn’t remember who Brian Turner was, so I used Kindle’s search feature to find him in earlier chapters. The biggest problem for me was: I couldn’t believe the culprit had the ability to plan and execute each move. For example, the first murder scenario required a great deal of strength to stage. Also, the culprit might know works by El Greco and Michelangelo, but I had difficulty believing that the culprit knew of lesser known works by Canavesio or Gentileschi.2.5 stars bumped up to 3, because I was able to read to the end without skimming.
I've followed this series from number one and will continue to read this series about DI Robyn Carter. It's summer and a young man is found murdered in a cornfield, outside the quiet town of Colton. Tied to a post, arms spread wide; Robyn is reminded of the crucifixion, and she knows she’s looking for a killer with a twisted sense of right and wrong. Carol Wyer's book is fast paced and gripping and will have you turning the pages. The only complaint is that I feel that the characters under her command could be more fleshed out. I don't feel that they are given their due. I am intrigued by her dead/missing boyfriend, Davies.
DI Robyn Carter and her team really had rough one in this story. The twists and turns were exciting, as always. The murderer took me by surprise, and you could almost feel sorry for them to a point. I truly hope Carol Wyer isn't finished with Robyn Carter quite yet! Loved this book!
I think her other books were better than this one. As always we are left with questions. Will Davies ever be found....will she take the promotion? I guess you have to read the next book to find out. So so plot. I figured out the killer pretty quick. So not the best in the series.
