Death Vigil Volume 1 (Death Vigil Tp) Reviews
Death likes to slap in some earbuds and dance like no ones watching....and they better not be! The biggest, meanest monster of them all loves video games and geeking out. And a girl discovers that the end really isn't just that. There's work to be done, saving the world, and our motley crew will damn sure do it. Stjepan Sejic brings us another great story, unlike the one you'll find in
Funny, dark, violent, quirky characters, elder gods, feathered dinosaurs, necromancers, and death herself. What is there not to love about this comic? Written and illustrated by the wonderful Stjepan Sejic, one of my favorites. Characters are relateable, and well written. Dialogue is fast, funny, and yet serious(ish). The art is fantastic (as always). The story is compelling, and will leave you wanting more. As of yet, there is no V2, but here's hoping the future is bright and kind, and we will get it. If this is your first experience with Sejic's work, I strongly suggest checking out his other works. Humorous, great storytelling and beautiful art are the essence of his style, making everything he touches a must read!
I follow artists, not studios or cannons or characters, and Stjepan is one of my absolute favourites, affecting my drawing psyche as much as Michael Turner did with Fathom years ago. His ability to create relatable characters fantastic. I read another reviewer relate to the snark as being on par with that of current superhero movies, and that is a fair statement, however the comedy does not seem out of turn for the characters personality. The conflicts are organic enough in cause and effect, and the foreshadowing of coming events seems well thought out. I look forward to fidgeting while the next volume gets compiled.
If you love modern fantasy, horror, desperate heroes and badass monsters, death vigil is for YOU.
Stjepan Sejic does it again in a remarkable comic series about the adventures after death. The writing and art are amazing, characterization makes heroes relatable and villains empathetic, and humorous bits snuck it make even the most dramatic scenes a hoot without ruining the mood. I followed the Death Vigil series as Sejic worked on it, but having all 10 volumes in one book has made for enjoyable nights of kicking back and reading one of my favorite series.
I'm still shocked that the writer and the artist are the same person. It's rare to see art of this quality combined with really good storytelling and hilarious dialogue.
I NEED THE SECOND VOLUME NOW!!!! I thoroughly enjoyed this story after reading it on the author's Deviant Art page and just had to have the physical copy. The art is phenomenal, and while the snark is on par with the latest avengers movie the humor is much better, and the story line is much more original than your standard comic fare. I'm not generally one for eldritch forces encroaching on our world, but in this case I'll make an exception! Its a very rich character driven piece, and packs a very surprising amount of depth in it's pages. I'm trying very hard not to spoil things in this review, I am so amped since I got my copy in the mail today.
I normally like to provide some insight into the defining characteristics of a work in order to help others decide if they want to read it. In this case, it's either the title or copying the entire story. This is a good read, with fun characters, a great story, a surprising amount of humor (given the concept) and fantastic art. If you like fantasy at all and my title sounds appealing, get this.
